Description |
The new Equality Act is set to be the most far-reaching discrimination legislation for many years and will have an impact on all businesses. It will mean all nine current anti-discriminatory laws will fall under one single Act.
When it is passed later this year, the new Equality Act will strengthen the law in several different ways:
> Businesses will no longer be able to treat customers differently because they are older.
> There will be new rules on transparency concerning men and women's pay.
> Positive action will be allowed, so that under-representation of disadvantaged or minority groups can be taken into account when considering two otherwise equal candidates for work.
> Public authorities will be required to take action about equality when buying from private and third sector businesses.
> There will be new, legally binding duties placed on public bodies covering equality and socio-economic inclusion.
> "Discrimination by association" will be tackled as well as "discrimination arising from disability
