Title

Help bring the 'UK City of Culture' to North East England!

Date

23 November 2009

Description

It’s not too late to show your support and back Durham City in its bid to become the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013. With its breathtaking castle and cathedral, romantic cobbled streets and impressive architecture, Durham will be pitching against 22 other cities from across the country for the prestigious title. Durham’s bid is not only centred on its historical city, but is designed to bring economic, social and cultural benefits to the whole of County Durham and the North East, a key feature of what is expected of the eventual winner. A successful bid would help support regional tourism and bring huge benefits to businesses, as thousands will flock to experience the many key attractions and displays which would be staged as a result. The winning city could also have the honour of hosting high-profile media events including the Turner Prize, BBC Sports Personality of the Year, The Brit Awards and the RIBA Stirling Prize as part of their year in the spotlight. A partnership of organisations, led by Durham County Council, is currently working to prepare Durham’s entry, which must be submitted by December 11. Anyone who has not registered their support is urged to do so by visiting www.durhamcityofculture.co.uk
