TWO Durham Business Club hairdressing trainees have impressed their bosses so much that they are already training to teach other youngsters the tricks of their trade.
The NVQ Level 3 apprentices who are both employed by local salons are now taking the A1 Assessors course which will enable them to mark other students’ work in a matter of months.
One of the students, 22-year old Sophie Barbaro, is also taking an NVQ in Learning and Development, which is usually sat separately from the Assessors course, but which will enable her to take on a teaching role a lot sooner than usual. Sophie helps her father Domenico run Durham’s Enzo’s hair salon on New Elvet and aims to teach hairdressing in a local college, once qualified.
Meanwhile, ex-salesman Stephen Laing, 27, is branching out again with a course that will equip him with the skills to assess other students’ work. Stephen, who also hopes to go into teaching and is currently taking a day’s supervised teaching along with Sophie at Durham Business Club, explained: “The course is brilliant in that it equips you very quickly with all you need to become a trained assessor. Personally, I’ve found the support the Club gives me, absolutely invaluable. I’m looking forward to helping to train future hairdressers and would definitely recommend the course to other students.”
