Businesses tee off for charity

Date

11 May 2009

Description

DURHAM Business Club was the first company in the region to host an event in support of charity Young Enterprise North East’s (YENE) One Day campaign. On a beautiful, sunny, April day at Beamish Park Golf Club near Stanley, County Durham, 13 teams of four competed in an 18-hole tournament for the Durham Cup trophy and a variety of other prizes sponsored by club members. The eventual team winners were from Garlands with runners up RHK Business Advisers LLP and Durham City Managers. We welcomed teams from all types and sizes of businesses and had a fantastic day. The generosity of a number of members who sponsored the event or gave raffle prizes enabled us to give £800 to Young Enterprise. The One Day campaign asks employers ‘what could you give up in one day?’ and outlines 10 pledges to pick from, such as giving up one days profit, employees’ time to volunteer or - what Durham Business Club pledged - one day to organise and host an event to promote YENE to clients. YENE chief executive Catherine Marchant said: “We are extremely grateful to Durham Business Club for being the first business to tick the ‘host an event’ pledge and organise this event in support of the One Day campaign. We rely on businesses like this to run our programmes. So far the One Day campaign has been a success, however we need businesses to carry on signing up to allow us to run a programme that offers young people valid enterprise education.” The One Day campaign aimed to sign up one company every working day across 18 months and is still relying on businesses to sign up to help it meet this target.
